Définition d'Indicateurs de performance et d'un Tableau de bord pour la Réserve Naturelle Marine de La Réunion (Rapport du site atelier de La Réunion pour le projet PAMPA) ArchiMer
Tessier, Emmanuel; Pothin, Karine; Chabanet, Pascale; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Bissery, Claire; David, Gilbert; Thomassin, Aurélie; Lemoigne, Valerie; Loiseau, Nicolas.
The objectives of marine protected areas (MPA), such as Reunion’s Marine Reserve founded in 2007, are (i) protect habitats (ecosystems) and resources (biodiversity) from increasing pressure due to a major urban, economic and recreational development; ii) manage uses and conflicts between traditional fisheries, spear-fishing, diving and recreational activities inside the coastal zone. These goals necessitate monitoring tools such as indicators and diagnostics. The PAMPA programme involves seven MPA including the Natural Marine Reserve of La Reunion (RNMR). It aims for each site to identify and validate indicators according to management objectives and group them in a MPA performance dashboard. This panel will help to visualize temporal trends and define...

Genetic connectivity of the reef fish Lutjanus kasmira at the scale of the western Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Muths, Delphine; Gouws, G.; Mwale, M.; Tessier, Emmanuel; Bourjea, Jerome.
Examining the genetic structure of species allows an estimate of the level of evolutionary connectivity between localities; this information is important for marine biodiversity protection, in particular, for the delineation of marine protected areas. In this context, a total of 601 Lutjanus kasmira (Forsskal, 1775) were sampled in 16 localities of the western Indian Ocean and analyzed with both mitochondrial cytochrome b sequencing and eight microsatellite loci genotyping. Both genetic markers indicate that differentiation was not significant even between samples separated by more than 4000 km. This absence of genetic differentiation among samples was favored by ecological plasticity of the species and is now ensured by resultant high levels of dispersal....

Genetic structure of the reef grouper Epinephelus merra in the West Indian Ocean appears congruent with biogeographic and oceanographic boundaries ArchiMer
Muths, Delphine; Tessier, Emmanuel; Bourjea, Jerome.
The reef fauna connectivity of the West Indian Ocean (WIO) is one of the least studied globally. Here we use genetic analyses of the grouper Epinephelus merra (Bloch 1793) to determine patterns of connectivity and to identify barriers to dispersal in this WIO marine area. Phylogeographic and population-level analyses were conducted on cytochrome b sequences and microsatellites (13 loci) from 557 individuals sampled in 15 localities distributed across the West Indian Ocean. Additional samples from the Pacific Ocean were used to benchmark the WIO population structure. The high level of divergence revealed between Indian and Pacific localities (of about 4.5% in sequences) might be the signature of the major tectonic and climatic changes operating at the...

Participatory approach to identify governance indicators for integrated coastal zone management, the case of marine protected areas ArchiMer
David, G; Cazalet, B; Barnay, As; Charbonnel, E; Couture, E; Ferraris, J; Fleury, Pierre-gildas; Malterre, P; Pascal, N; Pelletier, Dominique; Salaun, P; Tessier, Emmanuel; Thomassin, A.
Marine protected areas are a laboratory of integrated coastal management. Driving the MPA system requires the implementation of a battery of indicators of governance. This governance must take into account both the internal dynamics of the system and the threats coming from the system environment. As part of a research project funded by the French Ministry of Ecology, (Liteau program), 4 coral reef MPAs were selected as pilote studies (St Martin in the Caribbean, Reunion and Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, the South Lagoon of New Caledonia in Oceania) to develop jointly between scientists and managers of MPAs governance indicators. The approach is definitely bottom up. It is based on the co-construction of indicators. In that way, the views of the scientists...

ArchiMer
Roos, David; Tessier, Emmanuel; Taquet, Marc.
Data on the potential exploitation of deep demersal fish species in Reunion Island are very limited. The Regional Comitee for Sea Fisheries and Marine Breeding, with the scientific and technical support of Ifremer of La Reunion, has launched prospecting campaigns to identify and characterize deep-sea fish species (between 150 to 600 m deep), with an innovative method of catching with electric reel. The catches made concern mainly 5 main species (yields, frequency of catch, commercial interest). A new species, the brillant pomfret (Eumegistus illustris), as well as the longtail red snapper (Etelis coruscans), are the both main resources that can be exploited by the electric reel technique. They represent more than 60% of the overall catches made during the...

Restricted dispersal of the reef fish Myripristis berndti at the scale of the SW Indian Ocean ArchiMer
Muths, Delphine; Tessier, Emmanuel; Gouws, G.; Craig, M.; Mwale, M.; Mwaluma, J.; Mwandya, A.; Bourjea, Jerome.
The reef fish Myripristis berndti (Jordan & Everman 1903) is a pantropical species. A genetic analysis was conducted on 353 individuals from 10 localities distributed across the SW Indian Ocean (SWIO) in order to determine patterns of connectivity in the SWIO. Both the mtDNA sequences (711-bp cytochrome b sequences) and the microsatellites (8 newly developed loci) reveal spatial patterns of differentiation within the SWIO. There is, however, a discrepancy between the structure observed with each kind of marker. MtDNA revealed that 3 peripheral populations (NW Kenya, SE Reunion, and SW Europa) were isolated from the 7 more central populations, which form a more densely connected population network, while microsatellite data indicated a more restricted...
